Since the beginning of the year, I’ve noticed an increase in bland, low-quality messages and content. Whether on social media or in my inbox, it is hard to unsee the signs of “AI workslop.” At the same time, several CEOs proudly proclaimed that their companies would become AI-first—or else (those standing in the way would be let go).
Whether in personal conversations at industry events or in dozens of conversations on my podcast, “What’s the BUZZ?”, I have looked for answers. Among the common themes was leaders in most organizations giving ChatGPT or Copilot to their team members and expecting their employees to magically become more productive. But few companies actually have a strategy, plan, or initiative in place that help employees reach that level of AI-readiness and proficiency needed to see an ROI on their investment.
But not only are employees left to their own devices, but managers are also. The latest Gallup research shows that managers have a significant effect on their teams’ AI use. Team members who are empowered to use AI report an 8.8x higher impact on their performance. In my conversations with leaders, the majority of them share that they struggle to:
